The .HD file extension is a versatile container most frequently utilized as a Printer Firmware Update file for HP LaserJet and Pantum printers. These files contain binary instructions written in Printer Job Language (PJL) or PCL, designed to be sent directly to a printer's internal storage or memory for system upgrades.

Because .HD files are engineered for hardware interpretation rather than human consumption, they present significant challenges for standard users. Attempting to open a firmware .HD file in text editors like Microsoft Notepad results in unintelligible garbled text, and they are completely incompatible with standard image viewers or PDF readers.
