About MAPX files

The .MAPX file extension is most commonly an ArcGIS Pro map document or map package file created by Esri. These files store the visual representation of a map, including pointers to spatial data, layer styling, custom symbology, and coordinate systems. Depending on how it was saved, the file is either encoded as plain text JSON or bundled as a ZIP archive containing multiple map assets. Less commonly, .MAPX files act as SQLite databases for e-Sword Bible study software or HDF5 containers for Thermo Fisher microscopy data.

The primary disadvantage of an ArcGIS Pro .MAPX file is strict vendor lock-in. To natively render the map layers, you generally need an active, expensive subscription to ArcGIS Pro. It is not supported by standard web browsers or basic image viewers. Furthermore, because a standard map document only references external data sources rather than embedding the raw spatial data itself, sharing the file alone often results in broken links and missing data for the recipient.

To make the spatial data accessible, conversion or extraction is necessary. For web mapping and developer use, extract the raw styling definitions to JSON. For broad sharing and printing without GIS tools, convert the map to a flat vector format like PDF or SVG. If you need to migrate spatial vectors to Google Earth, target KML or KMZ. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software right here on convert.guru.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MAPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MPKX, MAP, SD, SOS and 3DD files.

The MAPX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MAPX converter.
