About SEM files
The .SEM file extension represents two completely different technical worlds: high-precision timber engineering and modular audio synthesis.
First, and most critical for conversion workflows, is the SEMA Project File. Created by SEMA Software, these files act as containers for complex 3D data used in timber construction, stair design, and roofing. A major friction point for architects is that .SEM files are proprietary and cannot be opened directly in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or Revit. To share these designs with clients or engineers who lack the expensive SEMA suite, users must typically convert them to interoperable formats like DXF, DWG, or IFC (Industry Foundation Classes).
Second, the format is widely found as a SynthEdit Module. These are not audio files you can listen to; they are functional code components (often compiled C++ plugins similar to DLL files) used within the SynthEdit modular environment. Users often attempt to convert these to MP3 or WAV, but this is impossible as they contain logic (like filters or oscillators), not sound data.
Less commonly, an .SEM file may be a Set Data Dictionary Memo used by Alpha Anywhere for database definitions.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SEM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted TIF, JPG, HDR, ACD, RAR, JPEG, ZIP, MSM, MAP, SUO, SD and STD files.
The SEM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SEM converter.
