The .SAI file extension is primarily used for two completely different purposes. Most commonly, it is an accounting company data file used by Sage 50 Accounting. In this context, it acts as an XML-based pointer file that works alongside a corresponding .SAJ folder to store financial ledgers, vendor information, and company databases. Alternatively, .SAI is a proprietary raster image project file created by PaintTool SAI, a lightweight digital painting software developed by Systemax.
Both formats suffer from strict vendor lock-in. Sage 50 files are proprietary and require an active, expensive software license to open. Sharing these financial records with external accountants who use different software is notoriously difficult. On the other hand, PaintTool SAI image files store proprietary brush strokes and layer data, meaning they cannot be opened directly in standard web browsers or industry-standard tools like Adobe Photoshop without manual exporting.
