Convert RCP to another file type

To convert RCP projects to another format, you need Autodesk ReCap or other 3D software.

Convert a file to RCP

To convert other file formats to the "Point Cloud Project File" file type, you need software like Autodesk ReCap or a similar tool.

About RCP files

The .rcp file extension primarily identifies an Autodesk ReCap Project file. It acts as an indexing hub that groups together individual high-resolution laser scan files (usually rcs files) to compile a massive 3D point cloud used in architecture, engineering, and photogrammetry.

Professionals typically open and manage these files using Autodesk ReCap Pro, or link them directly as references into AutoCAD and Revit. Under the hood, the .rcp format often functions as a structured ZIP archive containing XML metadata that dictates how external, heavy scan data should be assembled. Rare alternative uses for the .rcp extension include vintage Recomposer music sequence files for Roland systems and industrial recipe files for Vorwerk kitchen machines.

The main disadvantage of the .rcp format is that it is highly proprietary and locked into the Autodesk ecosystem. You cannot natively view a ReCap project in a standard web browser or share it easily with clients who lack an expensive CAD software subscription. Furthermore, the .rcp file itself contains no actual 3D geometry - it relies entirely on a linked external support folder. If you send someone just the .rcp file, it will be completely empty and useless.

To bypass these frustrating vendor lock-ins and collaborate freely, you must convert the point cloud. For long-term archiving or sharing with non-Autodesk 3D tools, convert to the open standard e57 or las formats. For standard 3D modeling and rendering in software like Blender, convert the point cloud to a meshed obj or ply file.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RCP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RCS, E57, LAS, ZIP, IPCP, PTS, RPCD, BK1, DWG, LGS, BK2, LAZ and TXT files.

The RCP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RCP converter.
