About BK1 files

A .bk1 file is a generic backup container used by various software applications to store the previous version of a document or project. The format is most frequently associated with Autodesk ReCap (Reality Capture) as a safeguard for 3D point cloud projects, but it is also standard for Moneysoft Payroll Manager data and IBM SPSS Amos structural equation models.

The biggest obstacle with .bk1 files is that they are "dormant" by default; operating systems treat them as unknown file types, meaning you cannot simply double-click to open them. They often consume significant disk space - especially in the case of ReCap projects or CAD drawings - while remaining inaccessible. Furthermore, because the extension simply denotes "Backup 1," there is no universal structure; a .bk1 from Autodesk is completely different from one created by CA ERwin Data Modeler.

To make these files usable, they typically must be "converted" back to their native format by renaming the extension (e.g., changing .bk1 to RCP, DWG, or AMW). For archiving or sharing, once restored, the content can be exported to PDF (for payroll reports), CSV (for data models), or e57 (for point clouds).

Convert.Guru analyzes your BK1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BK1 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BK1 converter.
