Convert RCS to another file type

To convert your RCS file to another format, you need Autodesk ReCap or other 3D software.

Convert a file to RCS

To convert other file formats to the "Point Cloud Scan" file type, you need software like Autodesk ReCap or a similar tool.

About RCS files

The .RCS file format is primarily associated with Autodesk ReCap, a software suite used for reality capture and 3D scanning. These files act as containers for spatially indexed point cloud data, typically generated from LiDAR scans or photogrammetry. While highly efficient for use within the Autodesk ecosystem (including AutoCAD and Revit), RCS files present significant challenges for interoperability. The format is proprietary, meaning users without an expensive Autodesk subscription often cannot view or edit the data. Furthermore, these files can be massive, often exceeding several gigabytes, making them difficult to email or upload to standard web viewers. Users frequently need to convert RCS files to overcome these "walled garden" limitations.

For broad compatibility with other 3D software like Blender or older CAD systems, converting to E57 (the ASTM standard for 3D imaging) is the most robust solution for archiving and exchange. If you need to edit the raw coordinate data in text editors or mathematical tools, converting to PTS or XYZ is ideal, though these text-based formats result in significantly larger file sizes. For visualization in web browsers or game engines, converting the point cloud into a mesh format like OBJ or STL is necessary, although this process involves interpreting points into surfaces.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RCS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RCP, RSC, E57, LAS, XYZ, ZIP, JPEG, PLY, PDF, DWG, RFA, JPG and SVG files.

FAQ

If you want to convert RCS file to SMS, E57, RCP, DWG, LAS, GIT, STL, MESH, OBJ, FBX, DAE or 3DS, you can use Autodesk ReCap or similar software from the "3D Point Cloud Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RCS, try Autodesk ReCap or another comparable tool in the "3D Point Cloud Storage" category.

The RCS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RCS converter.
