To convert other file formats to the "Point Cloud Data File" file type, you need software like Autodesk ReCap or a similar tool.

About RCS files

The .RCS file format primarily functions as an Autodesk ReCap Scan file. It stores dense 3D point cloud data collected by laser scanners, LiDAR arrays, or photogrammetry drones. A secondary, rarer use is for JetDB Payroll database files utilized by software like Relyon Saral PayPack.

The dominant software for indexing and editing these point clouds is Autodesk ReCap Pro. Other tools within the Autodesk ecosystem, such as AutoCAD and Revit, import these files as references for architectural modeling, clash detection, and construction planning.

Users frequently need to convert .RCS files because they present severe operational limitations. The format is highly proprietary and locked to the Autodesk ecosystem. Individual scan files routinely exceed several gigabytes, making them extremely difficult to share over standard networks. Users outside the Autodesk environment cannot natively view the spatial data without installing specialized commercial software. Standard web browsers and image viewers cannot parse the heavy 3D geometry.

When interoperability is required, the best conversion targets are vendor-neutral point cloud formats like E57, PTS, or PTX. Converting to these standard formats ensures compatibility with third-party CAD software, GIS tools, and mesh generators like CloudCompare. Be aware that converting away from .RCS may discard Autodesk-specific indexing optimizations and visual display settings.

Because .RCS is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters consistently fail to process it. Most web servers reject the massive file sizes, and only the original Autodesk software can properly read or export the raw geometric data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RCS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RCP, RSC, E57, LAS, XYZ, ZIP, JPEG, PLY, PDF, DWG, RFA, JPG and SVG files.

FAQ

If you want to convert RCS file to SMS, E57, RCP, DWG, LAS, GIT, STL, MESH, OBJ, FBX, DAE or 3DS, you can use Autodesk ReCap or similar software from the "3D Point Cloud Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RCS, try Autodesk ReCap or another comparable tool in the "3D Point Cloud Storage" category.

The RCS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RCS converter.
