About LGS files

The .LGS file extension primarily represents a Leica Geosystems 3D Point Cloud Project. It stores massive, consolidated 3D laser scan data, including point clouds, panoramic images, and project metadata captured by professional Leica laser scanners. A secondary but notable use for the .LGS extension is as a sliced 3D model file for Longer3D 3D printers, which holds machine-specific layer instructions for printing physical objects.

To open or manage the 3D scan data, professionals rely on Leica Cyclone or the free Leica TruView application. For the 3D printing variant, the files are created and opened using Longer3D slicing software.

Users often need to convert .LGS files because they are highly proprietary and incredibly restrictive. A Leica .LGS file often exceeds tens or hundreds of gigabytes and requires a closed software ecosystem to open, making it impossible to share natively with standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or Revit.

To use the point cloud data in external CAD software, it must be exported to universal, open formats like E57, LAS, or PTS. Be aware that converting will strip away proprietary Leica visualization settings and specific metadata markers. For the Longer3D files, converting back to a raw STL or OBJ mesh is usually impossible, as the file only contains final toolpath instructions.

The .LGS format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it acts as a closed, heavily encrypted database container. Standard online converters fail completely because they lack the proprietary algorithms required to unpack the spatial data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Even with proprietary files, our tools can inspect the header, verify the file type, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LGSX, E57, RCP, X02, HPL30 and PTG files.

The LGS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LGS converter.
