The .bk2 file extension primarily represents a Bink 2 Video file, developed by RAD Game Tools (now part of Epic Games). Game developers use this proprietary format to store pre-rendered video cutscenes because it decodes rapidly and consumes very little CPU power. A secondary, unrelated use for the .bk2 extension is an emulator tool-assisted movie file for the BizHawk multi-system emulator, which is actually a standard ZIP archive containing controller input data, not visual video. Rarely, it acts as a Windows Indexing Service Data File from Microsoft.
The primary disadvantage of Bink 2 .bk2 files is their proprietary lockdown. Standard media players, web browsers, and video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro cannot open them natively.
