About PLY files

The .PLY file extension primarily represents the Polygon File Format (also known as the Stanford Triangle Format). It is a 3D geometry format originally developed by the Stanford University Graphics Lab to store complex 3D data from 3D scanners. These files store collections of vertices, faces, and optional properties like vertex color, transparency, and surface normals. A tiny percentage of .PLY files are Finale Playback Files used by MakeMusic Finale to store audio playback configurations.

You can open .PLY files using specialized 3D software like MeshLab, Blender, or the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). For more technical background, see the PLY Wikipedia page.

There are major drawbacks to using .PLY in production. These files are often massive, especially when storing raw 3D scans (point clouds) with millions of vertices. The ASCII (text-based) version of the format is incredibly slow to read and parse. Furthermore, .PLY lacks support for modern 3D features like animation data, rigging, or advanced UV-mapped textures. Native web browsers and game engines (like Unreal Engine) do not support the format out of the box without heavy optimization and parsing scripts.

To make this data usable, conversion is almost always necessary. For 3D printing, convert your .PLY to an STL file. For standard 3D editing and texturing workflows, convert to OBJ. If you need to embed the 3D model on a website, convert to GLTF or GLB. For integration into game engines or animation software, FBX is the standard. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy 3D software.

FAQ

If you want to convert PLY file to LAS, PCD, E57, STEP, USDZ, DAE or MAX, you can use MeshLab or similar software from the "3D Polygon Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP or 3DM files to PLY, try MeshLab or another comparable tool in the "3D Polygon Data Storage" category.

The PLY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PLY converter.
