About PWI files
A .pwi file is primarily known as a Pocket Word Document, a legacy format created by Microsoft Pocket Word on Windows CE and Pocket PC handheld devices (such as the HP iPAQ or Dell Axim). Unlike standard DOC files from that era, PWI files were designed for mobile efficiency and unique PDA features, specifically the ability to store 'digital ink' - handwritten notes and sketches drawn directly on the screen - alongside typed text.
While these files serve as a digital time capsule for data from the early 2000s, they present significant access challenges today. The format is effectively obsolete; modern versions of Microsoft Word (2010 and later) often cannot open them natively without difficult-to-install legacy filters. Furthermore, simple text extraction tools typically discard the handwritten 'ink' data, resulting in incomplete documents. Users holding these files often need to migrate them for archival or editing purposes.
To resolve this, we recommend specific conversion targets based on your content. If the document contains handwritten notes or sketches, convert to PDF to preserve the visual layout and ink strokes accurately. For documents that are primarily typed text, converting to DOCX or RTF is ideal for continued editing in modern word processors. In rare cases (approx. 4%), a .pwi file may be a Watch Window file used by Labcenter Proteus for electronics simulation, or an inspection project file for Autodesk PowerInspect; these binary formats require their specific original software to view.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PWI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PSW, PXL, WPI, TXT, DBK, DOC, DSN, BLF, PDF, CPT, PKPASS, TSX and FBX files.
The PWI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PWI converter.
