About WPI files

The .WPI extension represents a collision of three distinct legacy formats, creating a minefield for users trying to open old archives. Most commonly in modern creative workflows, it is a Inkling Sketch Binary File generated by the discontinued Wacom Inkling digital pen. This device captured analog sketches on paper and stored them as proprietary vector data (stroke, pressure, and tilt) in the .wpi format. Because the Inkling Sketch Manager software is no longer updated for modern OS versions like Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma, users are often locked out of their vector artwork.

Statistically, a significant portion of .wpi files are Commodore 64 Ward-Pro drawing files. These are 8-bit raster graphics from the 1980s, completely incompatible with modern image viewers like Photos or Adobe Photoshop. Opening them requires specialized emulation.

Finally, the extension is linked to WordPerfect Presentations, acting as a legacy bitmap container for Corel suites. Users typically need to convert Wacom files to SVG or PDF to recover editable paths, while Ward-Pro and WordPerfect images should be converted to PNG for archival.

Convert.Guru analyzes your WPI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The WPI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WPI converter.
