About DSN files

The .DSN file extension is primarily used for two completely different purposes: Electronic Circuit Schematic designs and ODBC Data Source Name configuration files.

When used for hardware engineering, a .DSN file stores circuit schematics, wiring logic, and component layouts. The most common programs that generate these files are Cadence OrCAD Capture, Proteus Design Suite, and DesignSpark PCB. In the case of OrCAD, the file uses a proprietary Microsoft Compound format. A much smaller percentage of .DSN files are generated by TinyCAD (which uses XML) or apparel software like Optitex.

The primary disadvantage of CAD-based .DSN files is vendor lock-in. These files are highly proprietary. If you send an OrCAD .DSN to a colleague, they cannot open it without an expensive, specialized software license. The format is completely unsupported by standard web browsers or operating systems.

Alternatively, in software development and database administration, .DSN files are plain text or INI-style files that store connection details (like server address, driver, and user ID) for Microsoft ODBC database connections. While easy to read, they can be confusing to manage without the Windows ODBC Data Source Administrator tool. A distinct third use case is the French DSN (Déclaration Sociale Nominative), a standardized electronic payroll file often handled by software like Cegid Quadra Paie.

To overcome these compatibility hurdles, conversion is the most practical workaround. For schematic archiving and easy sharing, convert your CAD .DSN to PDF or DXF. For manufacturing purposes, you must generate Gerber files. If you are dealing with a database connection or payroll file, converting to TXT, CSV, or XML will make the raw data universally readable. Drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DSN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DNS, DBK, QBW, DSNLCK, OPJ, PDF, DZN, AUTOSAVE, BRD, DXF, ZIP, ND and RAR files.

FAQ

If you want to convert DSN file to PDF, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT or X_T, you can use Cadence OrCAD or similar software from the "Electronic Schematic & Database Config" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to DSN, try Cadence OrCAD or another comparable tool in the "Electronic Schematic & Database Config" category.

The DSN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DSN converter.
