About BLF files

The .BLF file extension primarily represents a Vector Binary Logging Format file created by Vector Informatik tools like CANoe or CANalyzer. Engineers use these files to record massive amounts of automotive network traffic, including CAN, LIN, and FlexRay bus data. Alternatively, .BLF files act as Windows Common Log File System (CLFS) base log files, which Microsoft Windows relies on to manage system registry transaction metadata securely.

The major disadvantage of Vector .BLF files is their proprietary and deeply compressed binary nature. They require expensive, specialized software to open natively. Users cannot read them in standard text editors. To perform independent data analysis in tools like Excel, MATLAB, or open-source Python scripts, engineers must convert these binary automotive logs into accessible formats like CSV, ASC (ASCII), or MAT. The conversion process often risks stripping away network-specific decoding context unless accompanied by proper database files.

Standard online converters fail to process .BLF files because they are a closed, proprietary format heavily reliant on external database definitions (like DBC or ARXML files) to make sense of the binary payload. Often, only the original software or specialized Python libraries (like python-can) can properly read or export the data. Despite this, you can use convert.guru as a pragmatic starting point. Drag and drop your .BLF file to identify its exact format subtype, inspect the internal headers, and view any embedded text. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BLF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted REGTRANS-MS, BFL, ASC, BLF7, TXT, XLSX, MF4, ZIP, TRC, PDF, LOG1, DBC and LOG files.

FAQ

If you want to convert BLF file to ASC, CSV, ASCII, MDF, PCAP, TRC, MAT, DAT, SYS, DLL, EXE or DRV, you can use CANoe or similar software from the "Automotive Network Data Logging" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to BLF, try CANoe or another comparable tool in the "Automotive Network Data Logging" category.

The BLF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLF converter.
