A .CPT file is primarily a native layered raster image created by Corel PHOTO-PAINT, a raster graphics editor included in the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. These files are designed to store complex compositions containing multiple raster layers, alpha channels, object transparency, and specific color profiles. Less commonly, .CPT can also function as a Canon Printer Template, a Ccrypt Encrypted Archive, or a legacy Compact Pro Archive.
The major disadvantage of the .CPT format is its proprietary lock-in. Outside of the Corel ecosystem, support is extremely limited. You cannot open a .CPT file natively in Adobe Photoshop, modern web browsers, or standard mobile operating systems. Sharing these files with clients or collaborators usually results in compatibility errors unless the recipient pays for a Corel subscription.
To overcome these limitations, conversion is necessary. To retain editable layers in Adobe software, convert to PSD. If you need to publish the image online, convert to WEBP or JPG. For general lossless graphics with transparency, choose PNG. For archiving or cross-platform document sharing, convert to .PDF/A.
