The .PSS file extension has two entirely different primary uses. Most often, it functions as an encrypted password database created by Password Safe. These files securely store user credentials using the robust Twofish encryption algorithm. Alternatively, .PSS files are multiplexed audio and video streams used in Sony PlayStation 2 games. They contain MPEG-2 video combined with proprietary linear PCM or ADPCM audio data. Less commonly, .PSS can also be an Android image cache file, a PCSX2 emulator savestate, or an AutoCAD Plot Stamp settings file.
Both main formats have strict, real-world limitations. Password databases are heavily encrypted; you cannot open or extract the text without the original master password. PlayStation 2 video files use an outdated, proprietary multiplexing format that modern media players, smartphones, and web browsers cannot natively play. They are notoriously difficult to edit in standard software and take up unnecessary disk space.
If you need to access the data, conversion is necessary. For video .PSS files, users typically demultiplex them into standard M2V (video) and WAV (audio) files, or convert them directly to MP4 for universal playback. For password databases, conversion is only possible from within the original software by authenticating and exporting the vault to CSV or XML.
