About M2V files
An .m2v file is an MPEG-2 video elementary stream. It contains raw video data compressed using the MPEG-2 standard. It does not contain an audio track. Audio is typically demuxed and stored in a separate file, such as m2a, ac3, or wav. Professionals use these demuxed files during DVD authoring and video editing workflows. Some video games developed by miHoYo also use .m2v files to store pre-rendered in-game cutscenes.
The primary disadvantage of the .m2v format is its lack of multiplexed audio. If you want a standard, playable video file, you cannot use an .m2v file on the web, on mobile devices, or in standard media players without manual synchronization. Furthermore, MPEG-2 compression is an older standard. It creates unnecessarily large file sizes compared to modern codecs like H.264 or H.265.
To make the video usable, you must convert and multiplex it. For web delivery and universal playback, convert to MP4 (H.264 codec). If you need to combine the video with a separate audio track for archiving without quality loss, convert to MKV, which supports multiple streams natively. For legacy software compatibility, convert to AVI. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The M2V Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our M2V converter.
