About BIK files
A .BIK file is a proprietary video file encoded with the Bink Video codec, developed by RAD Game Tools (now part of Epic Games). These files are the industry standard for video game cutscenes and Full Motion Video (FMV) sequences due to their high compression ratios and low decoding requirements on gaming hardware.
While .BIK files are optimized for game engines, they pose significant challenges for standard desktop use. They are proprietary, meaning default media players like Windows Media Player or QuickTime cannot open them. Users often discover these files when exploring game directories to view cinematics or extract content for fan edits. Because standard video editors like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve rarely support the format natively, working with them requires conversion. For general viewing or uploading to platforms like YouTube, converting to MP4 (H.264) is the best solution. for high-fidelity editing, converting to uncompressed AVI or MOV is recommended to preserve quality before post-production.

The BIK Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BIK converter.
