About PSN files
The .psn extension primarily identifies a Product Structure Navigator session file used by Dassault Systèmes CATIA and ENOVIA (specifically VPM V4 legacy interoperability). These files act as "snapshots" or session pointers that define a product's assembly structure, linking to external geometry files (.CATPart, .model) located in a PLM database.
A common problem for engineers is assuming the .psn file contains the actual 3D geometry; often, it is merely a lightweight reference file (under 100KB) that requires a live connection to the corporate VPM server to resolve. Without the host environment, the file is useless for direct conversion to STEP or IGES.
Secondarily, .psn refers to legacy archive files from 3M Post-it Software Notes, a discontinued desktop sticky note utility popular in the early 2000s. These files use the Microsoft Compound Document format. Users migrating to Windows 10/11 often find their digital notes locked inside this obsolete format, requiring specialized extraction to recover the plain text.
Best Conversion Targets:
For CAD Review: Open in CATIA/ENOVIA and export the visible assembly to 3D PDF or STEP.
For Legacy Notes: Convert to TXT or RTF to recover the content for modern note-taking apps.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PSN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PSN file to ISO, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT or DB, you can use CATIA or similar software from the "CAD Session Structure" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to PSN, try CATIA or another comparable tool in the "CAD Session Structure" category.
The PSN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PSN converter.
