The .PLN file extension is primarily used for ArchiCAD Solo Project files developed by Graphisoft. These files store comprehensive Building Information Modeling (BIM) data, including 3D geometries, 2D floor plans, sections, elevations, and structural settings. Alternatively, .PLN files act as XML-based flight routes in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Opening an ArchiCAD .PLN file natively requires an active, expensive subscription to ArchiCAD. The format is highly proprietary and closed. These project files easily exceed hundreds of megabytes, making them impossible to preview on mobile devices or standard web browsers. Furthermore, if you try to open a .PLN file on a computer missing the original linked library objects, your 3D model will have missing parts.
To share your architectural work with clients or external contractors, you must convert the file. For universal 2D viewing and printing, convert .PLN to PDF. For collaborative CAD editing in AutoCAD, convert to DWG or DXF. For cross-platform BIM exchange (like migrating to Revit), use the IFC format. If you only need the raw 3D mesh for external rendering, export to OBJ or STL. For flight plans, convert your .PLN to GPX or KML for visualization in Google Earth.
