About BPN files

BPN files are automated recovery archives generated by Graphisoft Archicad, a premier Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. These files act as a safety net, containing an exact replica of the last saved version of a main project (PLN). While critical for data recovery, .BPN files present significant accessibility challenges. They are strictly proprietary, meaning they cannot be opened or previewed without a licensed, resource-heavy installation of Archicad. Users often struggle with these files because they are not natively supported by web browsers, mobile devices, or third-party CAD viewers. Furthermore, their large file size makes them difficult to email, and strict version dependencies can prevent older software from opening newer backups.

To make this architectural data usable for clients, contractors, or archiving, it is highly recommended to convert the content. For immediate editing and recovery, the file should be restored to PLN. For sharing design intent with stakeholders who do not own BIM software, converting to PDF is standard.
