About PLA files
The .PLA file extension primarily represents an ArchiCAD Archive Project, a proprietary Building Information Modeling (BIM) format developed by Graphisoft. Unlike standard PLN project files, a PLA file serves as a self-contained backup that encapsulates the project data along with all referenced library parts, textures, and objects essential for rendering the model correctly. While this ensures portability for archiving, it is a common issue for collaborators who do not own a licensed copy of ArchiCAD. These files are often massive due to embedded assets and are strictly version-dependent; opening a newer archive in older software is often impossible. Furthermore, direct interoperability with other CAD tools like Revit or AutoCAD is non-existent without intermediate conversion.
