A .original file is a generic backup file generated by software applications to preserve the state of an asset before any modifications or edits are applied. For example, Apple Photos uses this extension to store untouched JPG images, while game cracking and patching tools rename the initial EXE file to .EXE.original before altering its code. It is also commonly used by DSpace repository software for ZIP digital submission packages and by Google Photos to save uncompressed MP4 videos before stabilization.
The main disadvantage of a .original file is that your operating system has no idea how to handle it. Double-clicking it usually triggers an error because the .original extension overrides the actual file type.
