The .e file extension is a multi-purpose container that most frequently stores source code for the Eiffel object-oriented programming language or the E verification language. In medical and scientific environments, these files often contain EEG (electroencephalography) monitoring data generated by Natus NicoletOne software. However, users face significant friction due to this ambiguity: trying to open a medical data file in a text editor results in gibberish, while compiled Eiffel class files require the EiffelStudio environment to execute. Furthermore, a critical security constraint exists: the .e extension is notably used by the Enigma Ransomware to tag encrypted, inaccessible files. This makes identifying the file header essential before attempting access. For legitimate files, users typically need to convert Eiffel code to PDF or HTML for documentation, or export Natus data to CSV or EDF for interoperability with other analytical tools like MATLAB.
