About CME files
The .cme file extension primarily acts as an exported security video evidence container. It is typically generated by enterprise security software like Genetec Security Center or March Networks. Internally, these files often use the MKV video format but are wrapped in a proprietary extension to ensure chain of custody for CCTV footage. A secondary, rarer use for .cme files is as a compressed mind map document, structured as a ZIP archive, used by CS Odessa ConceptDraw MINDMAP or MetaMoJi Note.
Because the primary .cme format is designed for strict security environments, it requires dedicated standalone software like a specific CME Viewer to open. This is highly restrictive. It is proprietary, cannot be opened natively by modern web browsers, and fails to play in standard media players without specific codecs or plugins. Sharing these files with external stakeholders, legal teams, or police often requires bundling the viewer software, which many corporate IT policies block from running.
To make the video accessible, you need to convert it. For universal playback and sharing, convert to MP4. For forensic archiving while retaining quality, converting to standard MKV is the best choice. For legacy legal systems, AVI may be required. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser. Note that converting a security video may strip proprietary cryptographic signatures or metadata used to prove the footage was not tampered with.

The CME Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CME converter.
