About NUMBERS files
.NUMBERS is a proprietary spreadsheet format created by Apple for its Numbers application, part of the iWork suite. It is used to store tabular data, charts, mathematical formulas, and tables. Internally, the format is a compressed ZIP archive containing an index of XML files, property lists (PLIST), and embedded media. The main disadvantage of .NUMBERS is its severe lack of cross-platform compatibility. It cannot be opened natively on Windows, Linux, or Android devices without relying on an Apple ID and iCloud web access. The format is completely unsupported by Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets without prior conversion, creating significant friction in mixed-OS corporate environments. Because of this lock-in, converting these files is almost always mandatory for sharing with non-Mac users. For editing in Microsoft Office, convert to XLSX. For broad data processing, database importing, and scripting, convert to CSV. For printing and archiving while preserving the exact layout, convert to PDF.
