About MUM files

The .MUM file is an XML-based manifest file primarily used by the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) in Microsoft Windows. These files are typically found in the Windows servicing packages directory alongside CAB and CAT files. They define the properties, installation parameters, dependencies, and metadata of system updates and service packs. A small percentage of .MUM files also function as MATLAB Unit Operation Model Files developed by AmsterCHEM.

Working directly with .MUM files presents several disadvantages. Because they are strictly system-level configuration files, they are deeply tied to the Windows architecture and lack cross-platform compatibility. They are useless natively on macOS or Linux. Opening them directly can be intimidating for non-technical users, as they contain dense raw XML code. Furthermore, attempting to open or edit these files directly in the Windows system folders risks corrupting the operating system's update mechanism, leading to critical failure loops.

To safely read, share, or archive the update metadata, conversion is the best approach. For quick reading and cross-platform sharing, convert the file to TXT or standard XML. For archiving the update properties in an uneditable, secure format for compliance or troubleshooting logs, convert to PDF.
