About MUM files

A .MUM file is a Microsoft Update Manifest, an XML-based system file used by Microsoft Windows to manage the installation of service packs and software updates. These files act as a blueprint for the Windows Update service, detailing the dependencies, payloads, and driver configurations required for a specific update (often found inside MSU packages). Because they are strictly internal system definitions, users often face friction when attempting to "run" them; double-clicking a .MUM will not install the update, and most standard applications cannot process them.

Since .MUM files are essentially plain text formatted as XML, the most practical conversion is to TXT or XML for inspection and debugging. System administrators frequently need to view these files to troubleshoot update failures or verify component versions using tools like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code. For archiving or documentation, converting the manifest to PDF ensures the dependency lists remain unalterable. If you are trying to install the update represented by the .MUM file, "conversion" is not the correct workflow; instead, the file must be processed by the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MUM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MUN, CAB, NUMBERS, QIC, SYM and CONTACT files.

The MUM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MUM converter.
