About MAC files
The .mac extension is a technical chameleon, representing three distinct file types that require different handling.
MegaCAD Drawing: Most commonly, this is a proprietary 2D/3D design file from MegaCAD. These binary files contain precise vector geometry and assembly data. The main limitation is vendor lock-in; you cannot open them in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD without conversion. For sharing with clients who lack the software, converting to PDF (for viewing) or DXF (for editing) is essential.
MacPaint Image: A legacy raster format from the original Apple Macintosh (1984). These files are strictly monochrome (1-bit) and fixed at 576×720 pixels. Users often find these in old archives but cannot view them on modern OSs like Windows 11 or macOS Sequoia. The best approach is converting them to PNG or JPG to preserve the pixel art without the compatibility headache.
Macro Scripts: Text-based automation scripts for software like UltraEdit, Minitab, or SolidCAM. These are plain text files containing commands to automate repetitive tasks. Unlike the binary CAD or Image formats, these should simply be opened in a text editor to view the source code.

The MAC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MAC converter.
