About MAC files

The .MAC file extension is heavily overloaded and fragmented. Most commonly, it functions as a Macro Script or configuration file designed to automate repetitive tasks or store machine parameters.

Because the extension is so generic, it is natively used by a vast array of completely unrelated software programs. These include CAD platforms like MegaCAD, text editors like UltraEdit, the Maxima Computer Algebra System, IBM Personal Communications, and Minitab. Alternatively, a .MAC file can represent a legacy MacPaint raster image created by Apple in the 1980s, or an Apple Mach-O executable file for macOS and iOS systems.

This sheer variety makes the .MAC format incredibly frustrating to handle. An operating system rarely knows how to open it correctly.
