A .NUM file functions primarily as either a numeric dataset attribute file for C5.0 and See5 data mining tools, or as a disguised JPG image backup generated by Samsung mobile phones. In machine learning environments, these files store numeric data constraints used to generate decision trees. In the context of mobile backups, the file is simply a standard JPEG image with intact EXIF data that has been arbitrarily renamed by Samsung Kies.
The C5.0 data format is highly specialized and severely limits interoperability. You cannot natively import these proprietary dataset files into modern data science tools like Python's pandas or Microsoft Excel without writing custom parsers.
