About NGS files

The .ngs extension is highly fragmented and serves multiple distinct purposes. Most commonly, it functions as a proprietary embroidery machine design file used in the garment industry. Alternatively, laboratories use it to store spectroscopy spectral data (Raman spectrum), and visual novels use it as a container for NScripter game video files.

To interact with these files natively, you generally need niche, specialized software. Embroidery variants open in Wilcom EmbroideryStudio or Melco DesignShop. Spectral data requires Thermo Fisher Scientific OMNIC, while the video files are typically handled by TMPGEnc.

Because .ngs is used across entirely unrelated industries, users constantly face compatibility hurdles. The embroidery variants rely on a proprietary Microsoft Compound file structure, meaning you cannot natively preview the design on Windows or macOS. Users are often locked out of viewing a simple stitched logo unless they pay for an expensive, industry-specific software subscription.

To make these files usable, you must convert them. Embroidery users typically convert .ngs to standard machine formats like PES, DST, or EXP so the physical sewing machine can read the stitch paths. Note that converting between embroidery formats can sometimes result in the loss of custom thread palettes or specific stitch density settings. For NScripter game files, converting to MP4 is recommended for universal video playback.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary format. Standard online converters fail completely because they cannot deduce which of the six different .ngs variations you uploaded. Usually, only the original software can correctly interpret the data arrays. If our analysis detects a supported underlying format - such as the E.ON utility network surveys which are actually disguised 7z archives - we can extract the embedded content and bypass the proprietary locks.

Convert.Guru analyzes your NGS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DST, FASTQ, PNG, EMB, PDF, JPG, CSV, JPEG, ZIP, RPT, SLDDRW, TMP and BMC files.

The NGS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NGS converter.
