About NES files
A .NES file is a binary image (ROM) of a Nintendo Entertainment System game cartridge, containing the program code, graphics (CHR), and audio data exactly as it existed on the original hardware. Because it is a raw data dump, it cannot be opened by standard media players or image editors. Users typically encounter friction when trying to play these files on non-PC hardware or when attempting to extract assets. To play a .NES file on a Nintendo 3DS, you must convert it to a CIA package using tools like New Super Ultimate Injector. To run it on a Game Boy Advance interface, it must be encapsulated into a GBA file using PocketNES. For audiophiles, the proprietary audio data can be extracted to NSF (Nintendo Sound Format) or recorded directly to WAV and MP3 using emulators like FCEUX.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NES file to GBA, FDS, SMC, SFC, ISO, CIA, NSF, EXE, BIN, CUE, PAK or WAD, you can use FCEUX or similar software from the "NES ROM Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to NES, try FCEUX or another comparable tool in the "NES ROM Image" category.
The NES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NES converter.
