About ND2 files
The .ND2 file format is a proprietary microscopy image container created by Nikon. It is used exclusively by Nikon NIS-Elements software to store multi-dimensional biological image data, including time-lapse sequences, Z-stacks, and multi-channel fluorescence imagery. This format presents severe practical disadvantages for standard users. It is highly proprietary, poorly documented for third-party use, and produces massive file sizes that easily exceed several gigabytes. Because it is designed for scientific laboratories, you cannot open an .ND2 file with standard operating system viewers, web browsers, or standard consumer photo editors. Users without access to a paid Nikon software license or specialized open-source tools like ImageJ equipped with the Bio-Formats plugin will be entirely locked out of the image data. Standard online image converters fail completely when processing .ND2 files because the format is a complex database of raw sensor data and extensive scientific metadata, not a simple flat 2D picture. Often, only the original laboratory software can properly read, stitch, or export this multi-dimensional data. If our analysis detects extractable embedded image streams, we can convert your .ND2 file to standard TIFF for lossless scientific use, or PNG and JPG for quick sharing. Be aware that converting to standard consumer formats permanently flattens multi-channel layers and discards vital spatial and wavelength metadata.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ND2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ND2 file to TIFF, JPG, MP4 or PNG, you can use Nikon NIS-Elements or similar software from the "Microscopy image data storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The ND2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ND2 converter.
