To convert other file formats to the "Scientific Data File" file type, you need software like PerkinElmer Spectrum or a similar tool.

About SP files

The .SP file extension primarily represents spectroscopy data sets created by PerkinElmer Spectrum software. These files contain essential spectral data (infrared, UV/Vis, fluorescence) used in chemical analysis and scientific research. While powerful for instrument control and data acquisition, the .SP format is highly proprietary. This creates significant friction for researchers who need to share data with colleagues who lack a PerkinElmer license or wish to analyze results in third-party tools like Microsoft Excel or MATLAB. Opening these files often requires specific legacy viewers or the original acquisition software, locking valuable data behind a paywall. To overcome this, users frequently convert .SP files to open standards like CSV or TXT for numerical analysis, JDX (JCAMP-DX) for universal spectral exchange, or PDF for static reporting. A secondary but notable use of the .SP extension is for SourcePawn source code files used to write plugins for Source Engine games (like Team Fortress 2 or CS:GO). These are plain text files that developers convert (compile) into binary SMX files for server execution.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ASC, SMX, PS, ZIP, PDF, JPG, TXT, SPA, STP, CRDOWNLOAD, GSW, SPV and DOCX files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SP file to DP, PX, INDD, QXP, PUB, PMD, PM6, PM7, PM8, PM9, PM10 or PM11, you can use PerkinElmer Spectrum or similar software from the "Spectroscopy Data Set" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert MDI, PUB, PDP, PM4, P65, COMIC, WEBTEMPLATE, PMD, SPUB, INDD, PM5 or QXP files to SP, try PerkinElmer Spectrum or another comparable tool in the "Spectroscopy Data Set" category.

The SP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SP converter.
