About FNA files
The .FNA file format is a standard text-based file used extensively in bioinformatics to store nucleic acid sequences (DNA or RNA). Originally developed for the FASTA software package, it uses single-letter codes (like A, C, G, T) to represent nucleotides. Each sequence begins with a single-line description starting with a greater-than (>) symbol, followed by lines of raw sequence data.
These files are universally accepted by genomic analysis tools like NCBI BLAST, Bowtie, and SAMtools, and are frequently downloaded from databases like NCBI GenBank.
Despite being simple plain text, .FNA files present distinct challenges. Whole-genome sequences can easily exceed several gigabytes, instantly crashing standard text editors like Microsoft Word or Notepad. Furthermore, the format lacks structured metadata beyond the single header line, making programmatic data extraction annoying if the header formatting is inconsistent across databases. Users often need to convert these files to bypass extension restrictions in certain analysis pipelines or to extract header data into a tabular format.
For simple text viewing, convert the file to TXT. If you need to map sequence IDs to annotations, convert the headers to a CSV spreadsheet. To ensure compatibility with older bioinformatics software, rename or convert to FASTA or FA. For publishing or sharing small gene fragments, convert to PDF. Convert.Guru analyzes your FNA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FNA file to FASTA, you can use NCBI BLAST or similar software from the "Nucleic Acid Sequence Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to FNA, try NCBI BLAST or another comparable tool in the "Nucleic Acid Sequence Storage" category.
The FNA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FNA converter.
