A .MUP file is primarily a mind map document created by MindMup or EdrawMind (formerly MindMaster). Internally, these files rely on a structured JSON format to store hierarchical brainstorming data, node text, branch connections, and visual styling properties. Less common uses for the .MUP extension include 3D CAD model files for CollabCAD (which are secretly ZIP archives), update files for Mentor Graphics PADS, and Music Publisher scores.
While .MUP files are great for organizing thoughts, they suffer from severe interoperability disadvantages. They are highly software-specific proprietary containers. If you share a .MUP file with a client or colleague who does not use the exact same mind mapping tool, they cannot open it. The files are not natively supported by standard web browsers, document viewers, or default OS software.
