About MUD files

A .mud file is primarily associated with Autodesk Mudbox, a digital sculpting and 3D painting tool used for high-resolution character design. These project files store the complete sculpting environment: multiple subdivision levels, 3D mesh geometry, lighting setups, cameras, and proprietary sculpt/paint layers. Because the format is proprietary to Mudbox, you cannot simply open a .mud file in Blender, Maya, or Cinema 4D directly. The complex layer data and high polygon counts (often in the millions) make these files massive and incompatible with standard 3D viewers. To use the model in game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine, you must export the geometry to widely supported formats like FBX or OBJ from within Mudbox.

A secondary but significant use of the .mud extension is for MSC Marc, a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) solution. These files contain engineering simulation data used to predict stress, heat transfer, and material behavior under load. Like the sculpting format, these are highly specialized and require the MSC Mentat pre-processor to view or analyze. For rare educational cases, a .mud file might be a database from Textease, though this is largely obsolete.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MUD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MUDP, 000, MUP, XLSX, JPG, MAX, 3DS and MB files.

The MUD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MUD converter.
