About MSV files
.MSV files are most commonly Memory Stick Voice files created by legacy Sony IC digital voice recorders. Less frequently, they serve as game save data for titles like Motorsport Manager or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, or as 3D visualization files for BIOVIA Materials Studio.
When used as audio, the .MSV format is highly proprietary and heavily compressed. Sony engineered it specifically to fit hours of voice dictation onto early, low-capacity Memory Stick storage cards. The major disadvantage of this format is extreme vendor lock-in. You cannot natively play .MSV files on modern smartphones, web browsers, or even standard media players without hunting down deprecated Sony codecs. The official Sony Digital Voice Editor software was discontinued years ago and often fails to run on modern 64-bit operating systems.
Because of these severe playback limitations, converting .MSV audio files is mandatory for modern access. For universal sharing, web use, and mobile playback, convert .MSV to MP3. For archiving important interviews or legal dictations without adding further compression, convert to WAV.
