About RAD files

The .rad file extension most prominently represents legacy scanned document images originally generated by Wang Imaging for Windows. In this format, the file functions as a modified TIFF container holding scanned raster data. In other common use cases, .rad files act as Internet radio stream links utilized by audio software like RadioBOSS, or as raw data outputs for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems and Radiance lighting simulation scenes.

The primary disadvantage of the .rad format is its severe obsolescence and fragmentation. Because the Wang Imaging variant employs proprietary compression and annotations within its TIFF wrapper, modern image viewers and default OS applications almost always fail to render them natively. Similarly, radio stream .rad files are essentially unassociated plain text URLs that mainstream media players cannot parse without manual intervention. Users are left with opaque files that cannot be viewed, edited, or archived using contemporary software ecosystems.

To restore access to the enclosed data, conversion is mandatory.
