The .afpk file format primarily functions as an Audio Fingerprint Peak Data file utilized by the audfprint audio fingerprinting system developed by Daniel Ellis. These files store extracted audio landmarks - specifically spectral peaks - hashed to allow rapid matching and recognition of audio streams, similar to how Shazam works. A smaller percentage of .afpk files are associated with the Audiobook file Player Kit by Audible. The primary disadvantage of the .afpk format is its highly specialized, often script-specific nature. The audfprint peak databases are typically serialized binary objects representing audio hashes. They cannot be played as standard audio files, nor can they be natively opened by regular text editors. Users often seek to convert these files to readable data formats like JSON, CSV, or TXT to analyze the raw hash data, or attempt to recover playable audio like MP3 or M4B if it is an audiobook cache.
