About WMA files

.WMA files are audio streams compressed using the proprietary Windows Media Audio technology developed by Microsoft. They are typically wrapped in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container and were originally created in the late 1990s as a direct competitor to the widely used MP3 format. The format family includes four distinct codecs: standard WMA, WMA Pro, WMA Lossless, and WMA Voice. You can open them using Windows Media Player or cross-platform tools like VLC media player. You can find detailed technical specifications on Wikipedia.

Despite its long history, .WMA presents major usability challenges today. It is a proprietary, legacy format that lacks native playback support in Apple's macOS ecosystem (like Apple Music or QuickTime) and many modern mobile devices. Furthermore, older .WMA files often carry strict Digital Rights Management (DRM) locks, making them impossible to play on unauthorized hardware or port to new devices. It is also completely unsupported by standard web browsers for direct HTML5 audio playback.

For maximum compatibility across all hardware and software, convert .WMA to MP3. If you are migrating your audio library to the Apple ecosystem, convert to M4A or AAC. For web streaming integration, OGG or MP3 are the reliable standards. Note that converting a standard lossy .WMA to a lossless format like FLAC or WAV will not magically restore lost audio quality, but it will prevent further generational degradation during editing.
