Convert MPX to another file type
To convert MPX projects to another format, you need Minitab or other Data software.
Convert a file to MPX
To convert other file formats to the "Statistical Project File" file type, you need software like Minitab or a similar tool.
About MPX files
The .MPX file extension represents two entirely different, highly specialized data formats: Minitab Project files and Microsoft Project Exchange files. Modern .MPX files are created by Minitab statistical software to store massive datasets, generated graphs, Session window output, and complex statistical models in a single workspace. Alternatively, legacy .MPX files are ASCII text files once used to transfer project schedules between older versions of Microsoft Project and third-party tools.
Both variations present severe workflow roadblocks due to proprietary limits. Minitab .MPX files require an expensive, closed-ecosystem software subscription to open. They cannot be natively read by web browsers or competing data tools like SPSS or R. Meanwhile, Microsoft abandoned the MPX format over a decade ago. Modern versions of Microsoft Project (2010 and later) completely refuse to open them, forcing users to hunt for legacy software just to access old project timelines.
Converting .MPX files is a functional necessity for sharing data or migrating obsolete schedules. For Minitab files, extracting the raw data to CSV or XLSX is essential for broader analysis, while saving graphs to PDF allows for client sharing. For Microsoft Project files, converting to modern XML or MPP formats is required to maintain task dependencies and resource assignments.
These files are notoriously difficult to convert because Minitab relies on an application-specific structure, and Microsoft's old text format is poorly supported today. Standard online converters routinely fail to process them because only the original software can correctly parse the specialized layouts. Because modern Minitab files actually utilize an underlying ZIP structure, our analysis tool can inspect the file, extract the embedded XML datasets, and potentially bypass these strict format locks.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MPX file to MPP, PDF, MP4, MPJ, XML, CSV, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use Minitab or similar software from the "Statistical Analysis & Project Planning" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to MPX, try Minitab or another comparable tool in the "Statistical Analysis & Project Planning" category.
The MPX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPX converter.
