About MPX files

The .MPX extension represents two distinct file types that often cause confusion: the modern Minitab Project file and the legacy Microsoft Project Exchange file.

  1. Minitab Project (.MPX): This is the standard compressed format for Minitab, containing statistical data, graphs, and session history in a ZIP-compressed package. The primary friction here is the high cost of a Minitab license; without the specific software installed, this data is completely inaccessible to colleagues or clients.
  2. Microsoft Project Exchange (.MPX): This is an obsolete ASCII text-based format designed to transfer project data between early versions of Microsoft Project and third-party tools. Because Microsoft dropped write support for this format years ago, opening these files in modern project management suites often results in formatting errors or lost task dependencies.
