Extract text from Gantt project files (GAN)
To convert GAN projects to another format, you need GanttProject or other Data software.
To convert other file formats to the "Project Management File" file type, you need software like GanttProject or a similar tool.
A .GAN file is an XML-based project management file created by GanttProject. It stores task hierarchies, date dependencies, project milestones, and resource allocations needed for tracking team schedules. You can natively open, edit, and manage these files using GanttProject, a free, open-source desktop application available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The major disadvantage of the .GAN format is its strict lack of interoperability. Standard enterprise office suites like Microsoft Project or web-based tracking tools like Jira cannot read .GAN files directly. Project stakeholders, clients, and team members often cannot view the schedule without installing the specific desktop software, causing friction in fast-moving work environments.
To share project timelines with external stakeholders, you must convert the .GAN file to universally supported formats. Converting to PDF or PNG freezes the visual chart layout for easy sharing and printing. Converting to CSV or XML extracts the raw task data for import into other project management systems, though all visual timeline formatting is lost in the process.
Because the file relies on a highly specific XML schema defined entirely by GanttProject, standard online converters usually fail to process it into a visual chart.
