Convert XER to another file type
To convert your XER file to another format, you need Oracle Primavera P6 or other Data software.
Convert a file to XER
To convert other file formats to the "Project Scheduling Data" file type, you need software like Oracle Primavera P6 or a similar tool.
About XER files
The .XER file type is the proprietary export format for Oracle Primavera P6, the industry-standard software for managing large-scale construction, engineering, and energy projects. It functions as a text-based dump of the P6 database, containing complex relational data including the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), resource allocations, costs, and calendars.
Because .XER files are essentially raw database exports, they present significant challenges for users without a specialized license. You cannot simply double-click to view the schedule in a web browser or standard office tools. Opening a .XER file in a text editor reveals a dense, tab-delimited structure that is human-readable but impossible to interpret or visualize meaningfully without parsing software. Furthermore, sharing these files with stakeholders who lack Oracle Primavera P6 creates a communication bottleneck, as they cannot view the Gantt charts or critical path logic.
To overcome these accessibility barriers, we recommend specific conversion targets based on your role:
For Stakeholder Review: Convert the schedule to PDF. This freezes the Gantt chart and data columns into a universally viewable document, preventing accidental edits.
For Data Analysis: Convert to XLSX (Excel) or CSV. This allows analysts to audit resource usage or costs using pivot tables without needing P6 access.
For Software Migration: Convert to MPP (Microsoft Project) or XML. This is essential if you are moving data between P6 and Microsoft Project, though be aware that calculation logic (like duration types) may differ slightly between platforms.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XER file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XER file to MPP, PDF, XML, CSV, MSP, JSON, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG or CONF, you can use Oracle Primavera P6 or similar software from the "Project Management Schedule" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XER, try Oracle Primavera P6 or another comparable tool in the "Project Management Schedule" category.
The XER Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XER converter.
