To convert other file formats to the "Minitab Worksheet" file type, you need software like Minitab Statistical Software or a similar tool.
About MTW files
The .MTW file is primarily used to store proprietary statistical data worksheets for Minitab Statistical Software. These files contain rows and columns of quantitative data, along with variable definitions used in Six Sigma and general statistical analysis. Under the hood, modern .MTW files often use a ZIP container, while legacy versions rely on the older Microsoft Compound binary format. A rare secondary use for the .MTW extension is the 8H39 Waveform File, a synthesizer wave sample collection used by the Yamaha RM1x music sequencer.
Users frequently need to convert .MTW files because the format creates data silos. It is a highly proprietary, closed format. You cannot open it in standard web browsers, and it lacks native support in popular tools like Microsoft Excel or open-source data science languages like Python. Accessing the data requires an expensive, recurring Minitab subscription. If you receive an .MTW file without owning the software, your data is effectively locked.
The most practical conversion targets are CSV and XLSX for spreadsheet data, or WAV for the Yamaha audio variant. Converting to CSV ensures maximum compatibility across all operating systems and data analysis tools. However, converting away from the native format means you will lose Minitab-specific macros, graphical plots, and advanced statistical models.
Because .MTW is a closed format, standard online converters often fail to process it. Minitab intentionally restricts the format so only the original software can properly read or export the structured data. We can inspect the file headers and extract internal text. If our analysis detects the underlying ZIP or Microsoft Compound structure, viewing the raw strings or conversion to a standard spreadsheet grid may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MTW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MTW file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Minitab Statistical Software or similar software from the "Statistical Analysis Worksheet" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to MTW, try Minitab Statistical Software or another comparable tool in the "Statistical Analysis Worksheet" category.
The MTW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MTW converter.
