About MEPX files

A .MEPX file is a video project file created by Movavi Video Editor. It acts as a blueprint for your video edit. Instead of storing actual video frames or audio tracks, it stores the timeline layout, transition settings, text overlays, and absolute file paths pointing to the original raw media files on your local hard drive.

This file is natively opened and edited using Movavi software. Some legacy system configurations also associate similar project structures with Magisto (now part of Vimeo).

Users frequently need to convert this file because they mistake it for a playable video format. The primary disadvantage of a .MEPX file is that it is entirely proprietary. If you share a .MEPX file without the linked source videos, the recipient will only see offline media errors. Furthermore, you cannot upload .MEPX to YouTube or play it in standard media players like VLC. Rendering it out also requires a paid Movavi license if you want to remove the default watermark.

The best conversion targets for a finished project are MP4, AVI, or MKV. Converting to these formats results in a final, flattened video file, which means you lose the ability to edit individual clips, texts, or transitions, but gain universal playback compatibility.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally because it is a closed, proprietary project file. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack Movavi's proprietary rendering engine and cannot access the local media files referenced on your computer. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the underlying ZIP structure, and show the internal XML configuration or asset links. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MEPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MEPJ, MEP, MPX, PLP, XML, MP4, SIG, PDF, TSX, MV_ and MXV files.
