About MPQ files

The .MPQ (MoPaQ) file is a proprietary archive format developed by Blizzard Entertainment to bundle game assets - including graphics, audio, level data, and strings - into a single container. Used extensively in classic titles like StarCraft, Diablo, and Warcraft III, these files function similarly to ZIP archives but employ specialized compression, encryption, and hash table indexing.

Because .MPQ files are highly optimized for game engine performance and security, they are effectively "locked boxes" for standard users. Common operating system utilities and standard unzipping tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip cannot natively open or extract them without specific plugins. This creates significant friction for modders or fans trying to access the game's soundtrack, cinematic videos, or texture art. To utilize these assets, the archive must be decompiled or converted. For general access, converting the entire .MPQ structure to a standard ZIP allows for easy browsing. For specific media, extracting and converting internal BLP textures to PNG or proprietary audio streams to MP3 is necessary for modern compatibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPQ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MQP, EXE, SIG, BLP, M3 and WDB files.

The MPQ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPQ converter.
