Convert a file to MDX
To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Disc File" file type, you need software like DAEMON Tools or a similar tool.
About MDX files
Media Data eXtended files, identified by the .MDX extension, are primarily proprietary disc images created by Disc Soft for DAEMON Tools. These files merge the binary data of a disc with its metadata structure into a single container, replacing the older two-file MDF and MDS system. They are designed to create bit-perfect backups of physical CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays while preserving copy protection data.
The main challenge with .MDX disc images is their strict software dependency. Unlike the universal ISO format, which can be natively mounted by Windows and macOS, .MDX files are locked to specific virtualization utilities like DAEMON Tools or Alcohol 120%. This requires users to install specialized, often commercial, drivers just to view the file content. To bypass this lock-in and ensure long-term archival access, the best practice is to convert .MDX disc images to ISO for native mounting or BIN/CUE for legacy burning.
Note for Developers: In web development, .MDX refers to Markdown with JSX, a format that lets authors write JSX components directly inside standard Markdown. These files require a compilation step (using MDX.js) to be viewed. To share this content with non-developers, convert the source code to rendered HTML or plain PDF documents.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MDX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MDX file to MD, PDF, ISO, DAX, HTML, SQL, FBX, OBJ, JSON, DAE, 3DS or MAX, you can use DAEMON Tools or similar software from the "Disc Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MDX, try DAEMON Tools or another comparable tool in the "Disc Image Storage" category.
The MDX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDX converter.
