About M3 files
The .M3 file extension is primarily a proprietary 3D model format developed by Blizzard Entertainment for the real-time strategy game StarCraft II. These binary files act as containers for complex game assets, storing mesh geometry, textures, material properties, bones, and animation sequences. Because the format is strictly designed for the StarCraft II engine, it acts as a "black box" for standard 3D software; you cannot simply open an .M3 file in Adobe Photoshop or Blender without specialized, community-created plugins like m3addon. This proprietary lock-in is a common headache for modders and artists who wish to 3D print game assets or use them in other rendering engines.
Alternatively, in the geospatial and construction sectors, an .M3 file may contain raw survey data recorded by a Trimble M3 Total Station. These files store critical measurements like angles, distances, and coordinates. The challenge here is interoperability; engineers typically need this data in universal formats for CAD work. For game assets, the best conversion targets are FBX (for retaining animations) or OBJ (for static 3D meshes). For survey data, converting to CSV, DXF, or XML is essential for importing into AutoCAD or Excel.
Convert.Guru analyzes your M3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert M3 file to M2, L, CM3, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB or C4D, you can use StarCraft II or similar software from the "3D Game Model Asset" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to M3, try StarCraft II or another comparable tool in the "3D Game Model Asset" category.
The M3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our M3 converter.
