About BLP files
A .blp file is a proprietary texture container primarily developed by Blizzard Entertainment for use in their game engines. It serves as the standard format for storing textures, user interface elements, and model skins in titles like World of Warcraft and Warcraft III. While optimized for rendering performance with support for mipmaps and alpha channels, the format is inaccessible to standard image viewers and web browsers. Opening a .blp file typically requires specialized modding tools or plugins for software like Adobe Photoshop. Additionally, games like Civilization VI by Firaxis utilize a variation of this format for their assets. For general viewing, sharing on the web, or basic editing, the best solution is to convert .blp to PNG or JPG. If you are a modder intending to edit and re-import the texture into the game, converting to TGA (Targa) is often the preferred workflow due to its uncompressed nature and alpha channel support.

The BLP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLP converter.
