About MMP files

The .MMP extension is a "container" format used by several unrelated applications, most notably MindManager for visual brainstorming and LMMS (Linux MultiMedia Studio) for music production.

1. MindManager Map (Business & Education)

This is the most common use case. These files store intricate mind maps, flowcharts, and organizational diagrams.

The Problem: The format is proprietary. Colleagues without a paid MindManager license cannot open, view, or edit your strategy maps. The files often contain complex metadata that breaks if opened in generic text editors.
The Solution: For sharing, the best practice is converting the visual map to PDF (for printing) or high-resolution PNG/JPG (for web slides). For editing data elsewhere, export to OPML, Microsoft Project (.MPP), or Rich Text (.RTF).

2. LMMS Project (Audio Production)

In the open-source world, .MMP acts as the project save file for LMMS.

The Problem: Beginners often confuse this with an audio file. An .MMP file contains instructions (notes, tempo, synthesizer settings), not audio data. You cannot play it in VLC or iTunes.
The Solution: To hear the music, the project must be rendered or exported to WAV, MP3, or OGG.

3. Other Multimedia Projects

Legacy software like MixMeister (DJ mixing) and MovieMator (Video editing) also use this extension to save workspace states. Like LMMS, these are not playable media files; they are XML-based recipes requiring the original software to produce a final output like MP4 or AVI.
